Máximo Sozzo
Máximo Sozzo is an Argentine researcher specialized in criminology, with a focus on Latin America. He has been a Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh (2024–2025) and a Straus Fellow at New York University (2010–2011).
He has published 74 articles in scientific journals, 8 authored books, and 16 edited volumes. Among his most recent works are Punição e Sociedade Contemporanea (Tirant Lo Blanch, 2025), Punishment in Latin America: Explorations from the Margins (Emerald, 2024, with L. Dal Santo), Viajes de las ideas sobre la cuestión criminal desde y hacia Argentina (1880–1955) (Max Planck, 2024, with J. Núñez), Decolonising the Criminal Question (Oxford University Press, 2023, with A. Aliverti, A. Chamberlen, and H. Carvalho), and Justicia penal y mecanismos de condena sin juicio (Marcial Pons, 2023, with M. Langer).
Project
He is Editor-in-Chief of Punishment & Society. The International Journal of Penology and Director of Delito y Sociedad: Revista de Ciencias Sociales. As a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of A Coruña, he will carry out comparative studies on the transformations of penal systems in contemporary societies, aiming to innovate beyond traditional explanatory frameworks that are primarily based on Anglophone contexts in the Global North.
