University of A Coruña researcher Veronika Chobanova, coordinator of the twelfth edition of the CKM Unitary Triangle international seminar

A Coruña, September 28, 2023.- Ramón y Cajal InTalent researcher from the University of A Coruña Veronika Chobanova was the main coordinator of the twelfth edition of the international seminar CKM Unitary Triangle, a scientific meeting that brought together more than 130 participants from institutions from more than 20 countries between September 18 and 22 in Santiago de Compostela.

The seminar, which also featured researchers from the Galician Institute of High Energy Jeremy Dalseno, Diego Martínez Santos and Claire Prouvé in the local core of the organization, addressed both experimental and theoretical issues about particles such as neutrons, kaons, “charming” and “beautiful” hadrons, top quark physics and the Higgs boson.

During the five days of the event, the San Martiño Pinario hostel hosted several plenary sessions and parallel meetings of the seven working groups established for the meeting under the overall theme of the seminar: the precise measurement of the CKM matrix, whose initials correspond to the surnames of the scientists who introduced it: Nicola Cabibbo, Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa.

According to the Standard Model of particle physics, the CKM matrix is a unitary matrix that contains information about the probability of a change in the flavor of a quark caused by the weak interaction force. This information is key to understanding CP symmetry violation, which can explain the imbalance between matter and antimatter in the Universe.
