The University of A Coruña will host an International Workshop on Computing Applied to the LHCb Experiment of the European Centre for Nuclear Research

  • The meeting will bring together around fifty scientists of various nationalities, including 15 computer experts from CERN itself.
  • The organization of the event is in charge of researchers Veronika Chobanova, Diego Martínez Santos and Carlos Vázquez Sierra, all of whom are members of the Faculty of Sciences of the UDC.
  • Vincenzo Vagnoni, director of the LHCb experiment, will give the seminar entitled “From macro to micro: a brief journey through modern particle physics” on January 31 at 12:30 p.m., which will take place in the auditorium of the Faculty of Sciences and will be open to the public.

A Coruña, January 24, 2025.- The University of A Coruña (UDC) is organizing, from January 27 to 31, an international workshop focused on computing applied to the LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), based in Geneva (Switzerland). This event, which will take place in the city of A Coruña, will bring together around fifty scientists of different nationalities, including 15 computer experts from CERN itself, and promises to be a meeting point for the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the field of high-performance computing.

During the workshop, participants will address very relevant topics such as high-performance computing with GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), the simulation of physical processes and the use of artificial intelligence in data processing. These areas are fundamental to the success of the LHCb experiment, which requires enormous computing capacity to analyze the data obtained in research on subatomic particles.

The organization of the event is in charge of Veronika Chobanova, a researcher hired by the Ramón y Cajal and InTalent programs; Diego Martínez Santos, distinguished researcher of the Xunta de Galicia Oportunius program and researcher Ramón Cajal Carlos Vázquez Sierra, all members of the Faculty of Sciences of the UDC.

Throughout the five days of the event, conferences will be given by prominent professionals from the UDC, such as Susana Ladra and Verónica Bolón, both from the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of A Coruña and CITIC, who will share their experience and knowledge about the latest trends in applied computing.

Another highlight of the workshop will be the intervention of Vincenzo Vagnoni, director of the LHCb experiment, who will offer the seminar entitled “From macro to micro: a brief journey through modern particle physics”, which will take place on January 31 at 12:30 pm in the Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Sciences. This seminar will be open to the public, providing the opportunity to get closer to the world of particle physics.

The UDC thus reaffirms its commitment to the advancement of science and research, promoting events that favor international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge between expert personnel from around the world.
