- Among the speakers are researcher Clotilde Thèry from the Institut Curie in Paris (France), Héctor Peinado from the CNIO in Madrid and María Mayán from INIBIC in A Coruña.
- The meeting will discuss the latest results from different research groups in the study of antitumor immune activity and the development of new cancer therapies.
- It will feature a presentation by GALARIA, a Galician public company responsible for implementing advanced therapies and immunotherapies such as CAR-T cell therapies for the treatment of cancer.
A Coruña, October 6, 2022.- The Institute of Biomedical Research of A Coruña (INIBIC) in collaboration with CICA and the University of A Coruña organize the Science Xpression workshop. This year the event attracts to the city of A Coruña relevant researchers in the study of different mechanisms involved in the progression of cancer and in the study of antitumor immune activity and the development of new therapies.
The lecture session will feature relevant researchers such as Clotilde Théry, research director of INSERM at the Institut Curie in Paris, and President of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV). A pioneer in the study of exosomes, she has led the “Extracellular Vesicles, Immune Responses and Cancer” group since 2007, where she explores the extracellular vesicles released by tumor and immune cells, and how they mediate communication between both cell types. He has received several awards in recognition of his work, such as the ISEV Special Achievement Award (2014) and the Curie-NCI Award (2019).
Héctor Peinado directs the Microenvironment and Metastasis laboratory at the National Center for Oncological Research (CNIO). A PhD in Biochemistry from the “Alberto Sols” IIBm Biomedical Research Institute (CSIC-UAM), he has made multiple contributions to the knowledge of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition. His most recent scientific work focuses on the role of exosomes released by tumors in tumor-microenvironment communication during the metastasis process, as well as their potential as biomarkers in liquid biopsies. Among other achievements, he has demonstrated that tumor exosomes play a role in the preparation of the pre-metastatic niche, influencing metastatic organotropism.
María Mayán directs the CellCOM research group at INIBIC. A PhD in Biology from the Complutense University of Madrid, she completed her doctoral thesis at the Margarita Salgas Biological Research Center in Madrid (CSIC). Her group identified new therapeutic targets to increase the effectiveness of targeted therapies and immunotherapies in cancer. Throughout her career, she has made significant contributions to the study of the progression of age-related diseases such as osteoarthritis and has received several awards. It is worth noting that she is the principal investigator in two European projects and several national projects. María Mayán (INIBIC) together with Elena Pazos (CICA, UDC) and Manuel Becerra (CICA, UDC) are the organizers of the Science Xpression workshop.
Elena Pazos is one of the researchers with the longest career at the University of A Coruña. PhD in Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela, she leads her research group at CICA under a prestigious European project (ERC-Starting Grant). Among her achievements are the study and design of peptides as tools to develop biosensors and the development of luminescent sensors of proteins involved in cancer. She has been part of CICA since 2017, where she began her career thanks to the InTalent UDC-Inditex program.
The presentation by Galaria will be given by Mariona Bailu-Piquei, PhD in Translational Immunology from the University Medical Centre Utrecht, Netherlands (2019), where she studied the role of B and T lymphocytes during immune reconstitution in the context of chemotherapy treatment. Galaria is a public health services company of the Galician Health Service (SERGAS). During Science Xpression, she will present the objectives and status of the start-up of a cutting-edge manufacturing center for advanced cellular immunotherapies in Galicia.
For today’s event, a session aimed at informing and encouraging young researchers about scientific careers and mentoring activities is planned, where topics such as career opportunities in the company or data showing the barriers that women in science have to overcome to advance in their scientific careers will be discussed.
