A Coruña, December 5, 2018.-. The Rector of the University of A Coruña, Julio Abalde, held a meeting yesterday with the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque, who came to the city to inaugurate the exhibition “Science and technology in democracy 1978-2018” at the National Museum of Science and Technology, Muncyt.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the President of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo; the Mayor of A Coruña, Xulio Ferreiro; and the Government delegate in Galicia, Javier Losada, in addition to other authorities. During the inauguration ceremony, the minister highlighted the evolution of R&D&I during the forty years of the Magna Carta in Spain and highlighted the role of scientific dissemination and innovation in raising awareness in society of the importance of science and innovation for the present and future of society. Along these lines, Duque announced a new scientific culture program in 2019 to promote scientific vocations.
At the end of the inauguration, Pedro Duque met with Julio Abalde at the Muncyt facilities, in a meeting that was also attended by the Secretary of State for Universities, Research, Development and Innovation, Ángeles Heras Caballero. In the meeting, which lasted despite the minister’s very busy schedule, the Rector explained several successful UDC programs, such as the UDC-Inditex scientific talent recruitment program, InTalent. In addition, Abalde presented to the minister and the Secretary of State some of the projects for next year, which both Duque and Heras assessed very positively. At the end of the meeting, the minister expressed his interest in visiting the University of A Coruña to see its facilities and staff.
The Muncyt is a public museum attached to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, managed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, Fecyt. The exhibition shows scientific milestones in these forty years of democracy and some of the advances that Spanish researchers are working on. Among them, the University of A Coruña participates with a small sample of the work of its scientists. This exhibition is organized by the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial, CDTI, to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the Spanish Constitution.
